Meet Our Ultimate Warrior Blanket Recipients 3/5/13
This week we would like to highlight the next round of blanket recipients, our “ultimate warriors". These 7 brave individuals each have a unique story filled with pain, hope, and most importantly love. Thank you all for your nominations and please keep spreading the word. Each square that is made and sent is making someone’s day, if not weeks, months, or years, a little brighter.
John and Joyce were both nominated by their daughter-in-law. Below is the email we received about this beautiful loving couple. It was written so well that I did not want to paraphrase any portion of this truly heartwarming yet devastating story.
"I am nominating not one, but two very special people. On May 16, 2012, my father-in-law was rushed to the hospital after not feeling well for several days, and within a matter of hours, noticed a severe yellowing of his skin. After a battery of tests we received the devastating news that he had pancreatic/bile duct cancer. If that wasn’t hard enough to deal with, several days later my mother-in-law, also not feeling well, went to the doctor to seek treatment for her ailment. Within a short period of time, our family received another hard blow...she too had cancer. She was diagnosed with stage IV liver, lung, and bone cancer found in her hip. It has been a tough year for both of them, enduring several rounds of chemo and radiation, sometimes going together on the same day, other times they would stagger the days so that the exhaustion that comes with the treatment, would only affect one at a time. This worked well for both of them allowing the stronger one to care of the weaker one. It has been a tough year for both of them and they still continue to fight. Their never ending love for one another, and their will to fight, has kept them going strong. On Feb 16, 2013, we happily celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Through all of their treatments and set backs, they continue to help everyone around them, no matter how small. I couldn't imagine two people more deserving of a token of love and appreciation, than these two. Please accept this nomination for two of the bravest people I know."
Linda, 61, is a wonderful friend, wife, and mother. She has recently been diagnosed with uterine cancer which has now spread to her abdomen. She was nominated by a good friend of hers who said, “Linda is a great friend who is being supported by her husband and daughters, but there are many struggles and she could use some more loving care and support.” I hope that Linda has found comfort and support in the blanket. We are here for you, Linda, even though you may not know us.
Pat, a 58 year old nurse at Huntington Valley Surgery Center, was diagnosed was spindal cell cancer which has now spread to her bones and lungs. She is an amazing nurse and is used to taking care of patients and now she is so sick with her cancer her friends, coworkers, and family are taking care of her. Pat has an amazing husband, three children, and two grandchildren. She is loved by so many, especially her friend Donna, who nominate her for a blanket. Pat has spent her entire life taking care of patients and family that it is now time for us to help take care of her. Enjoy your blanket from the Pink Warriors, Pat. We are thinking of you!
Barbara is a 34 year old mother of three. Her children range in ages from 10 months to 5 years. She has been diagnosed with breast cancer that has already resulted in a double mastectomy and chemotherapy treatment. Radiation beings tomorrow for Barbara. Stay strong Barbara! We are thinking of you and hope you can find strength and comfort in our blanket.
Connie has been nominated for a Project Chemo Crochet blanket by her wonderful nieces. She is currently undergoing radiation treatments for adrenal gland, lung, and brain cancer. After finishing up her radiation, will be beginning her chemo treatment. She is 62 years young and continues to fight this horrible disease. Keep fighting, Connie! We are supporting you.
Stuart Scott is a sportscaster and anchor for ESPN. He was originally diagnosed with cancer in 2007 which first recurred in 2010 and last month found out it has returned once again. When Scott goes for his chemo treatment on Mondays, he then goes right on to his workout. He says that he "has extra motivation from the other cancer patients being treated” and that this is his “mental and physical way of standing up to cancer.” Stuart has been sent a blanket because he is an inspiration to so many in the world that cancer cannot silence courage, conquer the spirit, or invade the soul. You can beat this once again, Stuart! (You can follow Stuart on Twitter @StuartScott)
