Why We BoobieQ
After my mom was officially diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic breast cancer on December 2nd, she asked me if I would do a “race” for her. The biggest one I could think of was the Susan G Komen 3Day event. That was when the Pink Warriors were born. I scheduled our fundraiser, the BoobieQ, for Saturday June 2nd because it was exactly 6 months from the official diagnosis. It was a goal date for my mom. It would be a day to celebrate living and surviving 6 months with stage 4 breast cancer. Even though I remember my mom being in pain that day, she fought through the pain and enjoyed herself. I had suggested she take a nap (I could see the pain in her face), but she replied “No, these people are here for us.” (Always a gracious hostess!) It was at the end of the first annual BobbieQ that my mom made me promise to keep it going whether she was here or not. And that is why we are still BoobieQ-ing.
This is the third year of the BoobieQ, always scheduled for the first Saturday in June to remember the day we celebrate(d) her fight. It is taking something negative and seeing the positive. Our proceeds are now going to something that is near and dear to me, something more personal and satisfying. Through the monies we raise at the BoobieQ, we are able to ship chemo blankets to cancer patients and treatment centers all over the country. We have the seen the smiles on the faces of the men, women, and children who have received these blankets. We do not ask for monetary donations often, but we do count on them. The BoobieQ is a way to unwind and have fun with others for a common cause. This year the BoobieQ will have two locations, Fort Washington and the San Francisco Bay Area, Saturday June 7th. If you cannot attend, we would ask that you consider making a donation through our website.
Thank you for your continued support whether it be spreading the word, shipping your crocheted squares (we know that it also costs money to ship to us), and stitching blankets together. Every little bit of support counts and it does not go unnoticed. Thank you! We hope to see you on June 7th for fun, food, and friends!
